Who I Am
You may very well ask who is this guy launching MattinglyMD.com?
I’m Jay Mattingly, MD - a board-certified anesthesiologist and associate professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis who has been practicing medicine for over 25 years. In the last few years I’ve been exploring anti-aging, functional, and preventive medicine and am a recently board-certified Fellow of the American Academy of Anti-Aging medicine.
I initially got excited about supplements and ‘anti-aging’ in 1980 when I read Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw’s book Life Extension - a compilation of all the vitamin studies up until that time. And to say I’m an avid supplement devotee is an understatement. I take a LOT of supplements, but perhaps, more importantly, every day I increasingly realize that we’re kidding ourselves if we think that we can take supplements and/or bio-identical hormones and get away with eating junk, being couch potatoes, and leading a crazy, stress-strangled life. Acting committed to The Basics of nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle is absolutely essential to being healthy and feeling energetic.
As a patient, I’ve experienced many challenges. Surgically, I’ve had both of my hips replaced, two total left ankle replacements, a lumbar disk and two hernias repaired, and a couple of foot and ankle joints fused. Medically, I’ve been challenged by hypertension, high homocysteine, asthma, insulin resistance, adrenal fatigue and depression – Hey, I’ll be 60 in April and I’ve lived a lot of life – sometimes, not very sanely.
Pertinent to me and my history is the fact that I’ve been in recovery from alcoholism and addiction for more than 20 years. I’ve pursued a lot of therapy of all sorts. I’ve needed a lot of therapy. Despite the turmoil I’ve created and survived, most moments I don’t second guess my labyrinthian life. I’ve actually been given a lot of gifts in all that I’ve been through. Among other things, I’m able to be a resource here at the university and medical school - hopefully, I’m helpful.
I’m also the proud father of two beautiful kids – a daughter, 14, and a son, 9. I’m remarried with a wonderful wife and two great step-kids, 13 and 6. I’m continually striving to be a better father, a better husband and partner, a better physician and teacher, and a better citizen.
I’m a work in progress. I’ve lived a lot of life. But the truth is I still have a lot of growing and growing up to do. I’ve made considerably more than my share of bonehead mistakes. It’s painful to admit, but I have been and still sometimes am a slow learner. But I’m a grinder, committed to my path.
My sincerest hope is that this website will serve you. I know you wouldn’t be here if you weren’t committed to making yourself feel better.
